Here, Bonham is screwing the cross pieces to the strong-back that we will assemble the boat on. |
We marked the previously scarphed bottom piece for the curve of the bow and drove small nails at the marks. Then we bent the batten around the nails and here Bonham is marking along the batten for the cut. |
I'm cutting the 12mm bottom piece to the shape Bon marked. I really like the cordless circle saw for this light work. |
The bottom is laid on the strongback and the keelson is glued to it. We are using Meranti Marine ply and some White Oak we got a good deal on. |
The bulkheads are plotted on 3/8" ply and cut with whatever saw is handy. Here Bonham is using my 14" bandsaw to cut out the king plank notch in bulkhead #2. |
I have a good collection of PVC clamps cut from 4" Sch 80 pipe. They run from 1/2" to 1" wide and are handy for holding the various lumber bits while they glue to the bulkheads. We are using Marinepoxy from Duckworks throughout. |
With three bulkheads and the stem cut out, we had to put them together just to get a glimpse of how part of the boat would look. While Bonham holds the pieces, I take a picture, and Grandpa supervises. |

Bonham had three or four days to work with me and this is how far we got. Now I will continue on my own until he comes back at Easter. He wants a boat this summer. We'll see. |
