Ducknest Canoe

Judge's comments:

...Ozkal Ozsoy (entry 5) won a shed-load of points from me because he had taken the time to consider a wide range of propulsion options. He also got some extra points for giving his entry a good underwater shape. Well done Oszkal!...

...I enjoyed the venture into alternative methods of propulsion, and given that the fastening method is secure and watertight she would go nicely down the elevator, into the back of a station wagon and off to a patch of water somewhere for a n hour or two away from the stress of city life...

The project is called ducknest canoe and it is a design especially for people living in apartments. Being easily transportable, storable, mountable, demountable, light are the main properties of the boat.

The boat is a folding and nesting canoe design to be used by two adults. She has got five different propelling methods and two different storage options. She fits elevators, to the roof of a normal car, at the back of a wagon or a big car easily.

Propelling options;

  1. Like an ordinary rowing canoe, by two double sided paddles
  2. Spinfin propelled, the both hulls must have daggerboards preinstalled during construction which are suitable for spinfin usage.
  3. Side wheeled and pedal propelled option.
  4. Solar-electric outboard propelled. The panels also form a roof for the two passengers in this scheme, making the boat a very cool and comfortable vessel even while sailing under the sun.
  5. Sail propelled; as two hulls are attached each other with aluminum rods and the desing can be used as a kids catamaran.

Storage options;

  1. Nested hulls can be stored in any convenient place, basement, balcony etc, so two hulls will only need approximately the volume of only one hull.
  2. Demounted hulls can be stored in the living room, study room etc as two separate bookshelves. Drawers, Loudspeakers and lighting equipment can also be fitted to the hulls for more efficiency in usage and better aestetics.

The boat can be made from 6mm marine plywood throughout with stitch and glue method. Two 6mm layers of ply can be laminated at the mid transoms for extra strength for the joint areas. For the joint, an easily obtainable bicycle saddle quick release screw is used along with some steel parts which either can be found in hardware stores readily available or can be made. By placing the quick release above water level and sealing the screw holes of bottom steel pieces, the joint becomes totally waterproof.
